Solidarity with our Immigrant Sisters and Brothers in LA and Beyond
And Actions You Can Take Now
As many across the country, and especially Los Angeles, have been following, Los Angeles residents have been hitting the streets in support of our immigrant brothers and sisters and protesting the ongoing ICE raids. It is an outrage and an example of our country and community’s slip into a fascist society.
As a movement dedicated to mobility justice, we at Biking While Black vehemently stand in solidarity with our immigrant sisters and brothers in Los Angeles and across the country.
We are outraged by the violent actions of ICE, the national guard on foot and horseback, and the inhumane policies pushed by Trump and his Administration.
We believe that all our futures beyond oppression are bound together. We are a mobility justice movement dedicated to creating a world where every person can not only walk, bike, and ride around their communities safely, but they can also do it without fear of being detained or disappeared by ICE or any other law enforcement entity.
In this moment, we call on everyone to use their voices, resources, and skills and expertise to demand action and change. We don’t have to show up on the frontlines to do this, there are countless ways to protest and help create change. We have compiled a few resources thanks to many other incredible organizations on the ground sharing what is happening and how we can help.
Actions You Can Take NOW
Directly support detained immigrants by donating to the Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice (CLUE) Bond Fund at cluejustice.org/bond
Support local human rights and immigration organizations including: CHIRLA (Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights), Organizing Rooted in Abolition, Liberation & Empowerment (ÓRALE), Central American Resource Center (CARECEN), California Immigrant Policy Center, and PICO (People Improving Communities through Organizing) California.
Volunteer for rapid response which is a dedicated group of trained people who show up to the site of an ICE raid or a courtroom. Examples included showing up during ICE sightings, helping to provide monetary support for bond funds, or packing the court. LA locals can volunteer with ÓRALE by filling out this form; for anyone else, you can take this National Immigration Law Center webinar to learn about workplace rapid response.
Show up to a local action or mobilization (the social media accounts below have up-to-date information about upcoming vigils, protests, and actions).
In the Event of an ICE Raid
Rapid response volunteers are on-call at a variety of organizations to show up if you’re seeing an ICE raid. If you see one happening call the LA Rapid Response Network at 1-888-624-4752.
Share know-your-rights information (see below) and carry know-your-rights cards.
Know Your Rights
If ICE shows up to a person’s home, place of work, place of worship, or wherever, folks there should know the following
You do not need to open the door.
Ask what they’re there for (and request an interpreter if needed).
If they ask to enter, ask if they have a warrant signed by a judge; ask to see it.
Refuse entry if there is no warrant signed by a judge—they can leave info at the door.
Do not resist if they force their way in. Tell everyone on site to remain silent.
If you are arrested do NOT sign anything and know that you have the right to remain silent.
Long-Term Actions
Be an immigrant ally locally — this Indivisible article lays out specific ways to be an ally.
Advocate for and promote sanctuary policies.
Support various organizations fighting at the local level (see above) and the national level including National Immigration Law Center, ACLU, and United We Dream (largest youth-led immigration organization).
Urge your members of Congress to support immigrant rights.
